I hitchhiked from Buchanan NY to Eau Gallie, Florida (Feb 1963) and after a brief stay there hitched rides to Tampa and then north to Tallahassee and westward to New Orleans; from New Orleans hitched northward to Jackson, Miss and NE to Tennessee through which to Virginia and onward to Washington, DC then Annapolis, Md and from there back to home! Hitched over 4000 miles over span of about 12 days (not including stay at Eau Gallie).
Had little problem with rides. One ride was in a large station wagon that had a coffin in the back; driver worked at a mortician's. I never asked if anyone was in the coffin. A tractor trailor took me over 400 miles in one ride from around Rogersville, Tenn to Washington DC; also a ride from Tallahassee, Fla to New Orleans in a VW Beetle.
Went everywhere by standing on the side of any road. Quicker than a taxi, mostly great talkative people. Men, women would pick you up as long as you looked deceint, no problem. Not a worry to think about. Now days besides the police it would be quite scary with what the world has become.
