Clapping' the erasers was an honor for most...unless you got detention for some infraction...the it WASN'T an honor...but you told mom & dad you stayed behind to 'help' the teacher...kinda, sorta the truth, but nopt really...lotta 'Gappin' & Stretchin' goin' on...as Huckleberry Finn used'ta say...

I remember taking the erasers outside and clapping them together, during class "study times" This was when "blackboards" were actually stil black.
I remember cleaning erasers as being an honor. You got to leave class and go to the custodian's room where there was a special vacuum device. You slid the erasers along a metal guide over the vacuum that sucked the chalkdust from the erasers. Teachers usually awarded the task to better students who could afford to miss some class time. You were envied for being smart enough to be allowed to do it.

I recall being assigned the chore of cleaning the erasers, but don't remember whether it was as punishment or reward.
