The company operated hotels and restaurants along railways in the western U.S. It was most closely associated with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, and eventually operated its dining cars. It was well regarded for its food and service. Sold in 1968.

On its last run in July 1968, the train to the Grand Canyon had only three passengers. Service would not resume until 1988. Santa Fe briefly used the tracks for freight but they were abandoned and sold off just prior to the restart of passenger service.
Amfac was renamed Xanterra in 2002 (this was actually the aftermath of Amfac's bankruptcy) and Xanterra bought the Grand Canyon Railway in 2006.
