In NYC they became Stern's Department Store, or "Stern's".
There were three as I recall: this one, the one on East 86th Street and one in the Cross County Shopping Center, Yonkers, NY.
THIS IS THE NYC GIMBELS STORE, 6TH AVE AND 32ND STREET, NOT PHILADELPHIA. YOU CAN SEE NY PENN STATION, TORN DOWN IN 1967, AT THE END OF THE BLOCK. THE ELEVATED RR TRACKS IN THE FOREGROUND ARE THE OLD 6TH AVE EL, TORN DOWN IN THE 40'S. MAKING THIS A VERY OLD PICTURE. THIS BUILDING STILL EXISTS TODAY AS THE MANHATTAN MALL AND HOUSES A JC PENNEY, AMONG OTHER THINGS. IT'S BEEN GUT RENOVATED A NUMBER OF TIMES AND LOOKS QUITE DIFFERENT
