My first exposure to computer programming was as an 

electrical Engineering student at NYU in 1969, on their Sperry UNIVAC 1108 mainframe computer.  It had the equivalent of 0.5 MB of RAM and 90 MB of magnetic drum storage, and its CPU ran at a blazing 1 MIPS.  Yet it met the needs of NYU's School of Engineering while also running a realtime hospital information system for Bellevue medical center.
