As a kid, as soon as school ended my Dad would take me to the Barber Shop to get a Flat Top. Used Butch Wax quite a lot...at least it had a nice smell to it.
I rember my mother putting that stuff in my hair. When I ran my fingers through my hair, I'd wind up with the stuff on my hands.

I can remember using Butch Wax on my flat top, better than 50 years ago and I can still smell it. I also remember that on hot days it would melt and run down my forehead. In later years it came in a tube/stick and wasn't as messy to use.
