The best 'birch beer' that I can remember drinking is made by Foxon Park Beverages in East Haven Connecticut. It is still availble, as are all their other flavors and can be purchased easily on line!
Kids at sleepaway camp would occasionally mention "birch beer," but I didn't know what it was, just figured it was some regional kid's drink. It never came to the Bronx.
When I was a kid, my sister and I would go to the local "Royal Castle" for a bag of sliders and a gallon jug of birch beer. Those were the days.

Birch Beer seemed to be a particularly New England thing to me. I used to go away to Connecticut during the summer from NYC and drank it there though the picture has ome from Pennsylvania. I remember it being less sweet and lighter than Root Beer.
