Matchbooks with front-side striker area
In the U.S., this changed for safety reasons in 1973.
(Remember "close cover before striking"?)

As a kid I remember a neighbor called, Mr. Wallace (back then ALL adults were called Mr, Mrs, or Miss). He had one arm and would light his matches one-handed. He would fold a match over so the head was on the striker, close the cover, and slide the head on the striker. With practice (and a few sulpher burns on my thumb - lol) I got pretty good at it.

I just remembered a third: igniting a wooden match stick by swiping it under your front two teeth!

How about good old Ohio Blue Tip wooden matches ? Strike anywhere ? As a boy I had a great time striking them on my zipper and you could ignite them with your fingernail if you were clever.
