Yes, those low prices sound good now ; but don't forget that wages and everything else were "lower" too - minimum wage in 1965 was $1.25 so a 25 cent gallon of gas was 1/5 of an hour's work, before taxes. Today's min. wage runs anywhere from $7.25 to a little over $10 , with gas around $2 that's still 1/5 of an hour's work before taxes ... and a larger chunk of the "gas price" is now tax - remember when they used to post the amount of tax at the pump ? No more. So gas really isn't any more expensive proportionally now than it was back then. Just higher taxes all the way around.

In the summer of 1968, I worked at my Uncles Phillip 66 station. Regular was 21.9 cents per gallon and "Ethel" (premium) was 23.9 cents. REALLY miss those days.
I had a 1950 Sky Blue Studebaker Champ convertible that I bought in 1956. Most of that time Mobil Regular gasoline was priced at only 15.9 cents a gallon in SOUTH Jersey YALL !!!! <<< Yes ! I typed YALL because I now, in this July of 2014, I live in Texas and have No More Cold Winters and Texas has the Right Idea as.... DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS !!! >>> YALL !!! <<< "And that's the Name of.... that TUNE !"....

I used to go to the car wash and pay a couple of cents more a gallon, but got a full service car wash. Wash, wax, windows and vacuuming. What a deal, at the time...
Agreed, Duff! Isn't it about time we dropped that 9/10 of a cent stuff? Just round it up to the next penny, for Pete's sake! I've always wondered if the oil companies figure they're making an extra 9/10 of a cent per gallon or are they giving up 1/10 of a cent? The way prices fluctuate these days, who would know? Psychological mumbo jumbo. We all know that $3.699 a gallon is SO much less than $3.70 a gallon, right?

I find it surprising that the ".9" thing remains in use. Back then, saving a penny every ten gallons meant something. But now??
